Value added in exports, by industry, provincial and territorial
Annual provincial and territorial estimates of trade in value added (TiVA), measuring direct and indirect value added, imports, and jobs embodied in Canadian exports by industry, province/territory, and destination (United States vs. All other countries).
About this dataset
- Geography: Canada, 10 provinces, 3 territories, and Canadian territorial enclaves abroad (15 regions)
- Destination: Total of all countries, United States, All other countries (3 partner aggregates)
- Variable: 20 variables covering Gross Exports, Re-exports, Direct VA, Total VA Exports, Foreign Demand, Services VA, Foreign Imports Embodied, US Imports Embodied, and Direct/Total Jobs
- Industry: 435 industries across the Supply-Use Input-Output Industry Classification (IOIC)
- Aggregation: Summary level (33 industries), Link-1961 level, Link-1997 level, Detailed level (254 industries)
- Provincial and territorial estimates are NOT available for the latest two reference years (2023–2024); latest two years are advanced national-only estimates modeled on output/GVA indicators.
- Link-1961 and Link-1997 aggregation levels are terminated as of reference year 2022.
- No bilateral partner country breakdown beyond United States vs. All other countries.
- Data is annual with an approximate two-year production lag due to supply-use benchmarking.
Measurement notes
- Domestic exports vs. Total exports: The 'Exports' variable measures domestic merchandise and services exports excluding re-exports and inventory withdrawals. Total gross exports equals domestic exports + re-exports + exports from inventories.
- Direct vs. Total Value Added: 'Direct value added exports' captures value generated within the exporting industry itself. 'Value added exports' captures total Canadian value added (direct plus upstream intermediate inputs purchased from other domestic industries across Canada).
- Foreign Import Content: 'Imports embodied in exports' measures foreign inputs used directly or indirectly in producing Canadian exports. 'Imports from the United States embodied in exports' isolates the US-origin intermediate inputs embodied in Canadian exports.
- Foreign Demand Impact: 'Value added due to foreign demand' reflects the total value added an industry generates because of foreign exports across all industries (including supplying downstream exporting firms). At the national total level, this equals Total Value Added Exports.
- Services Embodiment: 'Services value added embodied in exports' reveals the substantial contribution of service sectors (finance, transport, professional services) that are embodied in both goods and services exports.

Observations
- COVID-19 contraction ($581B exports) — NOTES.md: Pandemic supply and demand disruption
- Global commodity price surge ($896B exports) — NOTES.md: Energy and resource price spike
- Advanced national estimates window — NOTES.md: Advanced modeling without provincial supply-use tables

The Gross vs. Value-Added Trade Divergence
Traditional customs merchandise trade statistics record the full transaction price of physical goods clearing border posts. In contrast, StatCan's Trade in Value Added (TiVA) framework traces the actual origin of economic value embodied in those flows using input-output supply-use tables. In 2024, Canada exported $921.8B in domestic goods and services, which embodied $677.8B (73.5%) in direct and upstream domestic Canadian value added and $232.9B (25.3%) in foreign imported inputs. Critically, $152.7B (65.5%) of those imported inputs originated from the United States, illustrating the deep bilateral supply chain integration where Canadian exports embody substantial US content before returning across the border.
Two-Year Provincial Data Lag and Aggregation Classification Break
Researchers utilizing Table 12-10-0100-01 should heed two critical structural features. First, provincial and territorial estimates carry a two-year publication lag due to the time required to compile and balance provincial supply-use tables: estimates for 2023 and 2024 are advanced national-only projections benchmarked to income and expenditure accounts. Second, with the May 4, 2026 release, StatCan formally terminated the legacy Link-1961 and Link-1997 aggregation tiers as of reference year 2022. For ongoing longitudinal research, only the Summary level (33 industries) and Detailed level (254 industries) remain active.
Notes
StatCan't core Trade in Value Added (TiVA) dataset decomposing Canadian gross exports into direct and upstream domestic GDP, foreign imported inputs, and employment across 435 industries, 15 geographies, and US vs. non-US destinations. 2024 exports supported 3.95M jobs (18.7% of Canada's workforce) and generated $677.8B CAD in domestic value added, with exports to the US alone accounting for 15.9% of total Canadian GDP.
